title: Impact of International Child Sponsorship from Taiwan: Evidence from Nepal abstract: Child sponsorship (CS) is a popular form of direct aid from wealthy country households to children in developing countries. Over 9 million children are supported through international sponsorship organizations. Taiwan has joined this effort since the 1990s, and more international and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have participated in CS. However, the empirical studies on the evaluation of CS are severely lacking. This research estimates the impacts of CS in Nepal, by collaborating with a Taiwanese NGO, "Calls over Ridges". Right after the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, sponsored and non-sponsored children had very similar living conditions, which creates an opportunity for the quasi-experiment. By the end of 2017, we observe some better progress in living conditions for the sponsored children’s families. We argue that the child sponsorship program provides small but important support for families on educational-related expenses so that they can have progress in living conditions. Since the pandemic, "Calls over Ridges" even expanded its work and impact to more Asian countries through online incubation program of young education leaders.
