    Title:
East and West : cultural exchanges in publications
    Authors:
    Okamoto sae
    Keywords:

This paper begins with the introduction of a book <Innocence gains a victory> which was written in two languages - Kanji and Latin. GuangDung printed and published it in the seventeenth century (it is now part of the collection of Toyo Bunko, an incorporated foundation in Tokyo). The paper develops a detailed investigation focusing on the books which display remarkable Eastern and Western cultural exchanges. A large quantity of the texts written both in Kanji and the Roman alphabet are mostly kept in National Libraries all around Portugal, Spain and France where the missionaries were born. However, the actual printing was the work of Asian printers. The Kanji books were printed in China, the place of publication. Kanji books which contain plural languages including the Roman alphabet are not very rare. For instance, a quantity of these books are in fact kept in the classical Chinese collections of libraries in Japan. In conclusion, it is certain that most books that show in book form Eastern and Western cooperation were completed in Asia, especially within the cultural circle of East Asian Kanji, whether the author was born in the East or the West. The major reason is that it was fairly easy to print the Roman alphabet using wooden printing methods within the Kanji cultural circle. By contrast, it was extremely difficult to print the Kanji alphabet in Western Europe.
