Abstract:	在中國的古書裡，如《山海經》、《楚辭》、《淮南子》等，屢見有「燭龍」神話的記載，內容是說在西北方太陽光照不到的陰暗之地有燭龍棲息在最高的鍾山之下，它全身通紅，人面蛇身，蜿蜓千里，醒的時候是白天，睡的時候是夜晚，不吃不喝，能呼風喚雨，對於此一神話歷來的解釋，有人以為它是古書上的「祝融」或是共工氏之子的「句龍」，或以為是天空的東方蒼龍七宿，這些恐怕都不能成立，十年前張明華氏提出「燭龍」是北極光，極具見地，本文用天文學的知識從燭龍居於鍾山之下，以為從中國觀察北極光由於磁極關係，以偏西北方向居多，來論證鍾山指帕米爾高原，又從燭龍的特徵，紅色及龍身身長千里來和北極光比較，在中國觀察北極光以紅色成分較多，及蛇形狀的極光容易被崇拜龍的古華夏族視為巨龍來分析補充證明，「燭龍」即古人對極光長期的觀察，加上部分的地理常識及豐富的想像力而形成的美麗神話。
