    Abstract: 在Handbook of Visual Communication: Theory, Method and Media一書的開頭，編者便指出，要理解文字，需仰賴特殊的學習過程，然而，視覺符號的觀看卻不存在此門檻，較之文字更具普遍性，因此，在語言以及文字符號之外，視覺的重要性不容小覷。另一方面，就台灣自身的經驗也可看出，隨著科技的發展，視覺對於人類的影響力日益升高，以新聞報導的發展為例，傳統的文字新聞已經不再能夠滿足觀眾的胃口，不論是平面媒體或電子媒體，新聞「畫面」的重要性大幅提高，有時甚至超越了「文字」描述。廣告、電影、卡通、照片、商標…各式各樣的影像充斥在我們的日常生活中，形成了極須重視的文化現象，也為一本討論視覺傳播相關理論及方法專書的誕生，帶來了養分豐富的文化土壤。
