    Abstract: 百回本「西遊記」中的人物除了取經五聖外，以觀音最為重要。觀音的出身首見於釋典。他本為男身，但隨著佛教東來，經過一千年左右的流傳，卻變成了女身，其住處由南天竺補怛洛迦山遷至浙省普陀山，其形象亦多有變動。至於觀音的前生為妙善公主的說法，在「香山寶卷」裏有相當圓通的處理。「西域記」和「慈恩傳」中的觀音為男身；玄裝在取經途中曾向他禱求而安渡沙河。「大唐三藏取經詩話」和「西游記」雜劇裏的觀音為女身；「詩話」中只略微提到觀音，「雜劇」中的觀音則積極參與取經之事。百回本中的觀音，面貌更清晰，慈悲更廣大，對於取經之事的參與也更積極。她除了安排厄難外，還教育五聖－－尤其是悟空－－以助成他們獲得救贖。觀音是百回本中的典型慈母，深受五聖的敬仰與民間的崇拜。
