    Abstract: 蒲安臣使團是中國近代史上第一個依據西方外交模式所派出的正式外交使節團。這是中國首次體認西方外交體系之架構，並進而願意在此架構下與西方國家打交道，其就性質上而論，雖亦是列強帝國主義壓力下的產物，是中國在被迫放棄自有價值觀後，接受西方文化洗禮的開端。但在另一方面，仍可謂是中國走出自矜自驕的天朝觀念後，邁入世界的第一步，對中國現代外交關係的開展與新國際觀的認知有一定的重要性。其次，該使團的帶隊者－蒲安臣，身為前美國駐華公使，如今卻擔任中國使臣，負起了帶引中國走向世界的重責，其意義更是不同凡響：他的出任此職，除了意味著其本人素與華友善的性格與夫中國人對美國的特殊情感外，更是象徵著英、美對華「合作政策」的具體化。簡言之，蒲安臣使團對中國而言，是起著試金石的作用，是中國邁入國際社會時，所進行的投石問路舉動；對於英、美而言，則是其日後對華政策－合作政策與門戶開放政策－的初次體現。
