After U.S. President Donald Trump took office, he stuck with his "America first" policy; therefore, the U.S. cannot play the role as a public goods provider anymore. Because of this new role, this change for the United States will impact its relations with its East Asian allies, as well as resulting in the "alliance shrinkage" and bringing changes to the East Asian security posture. This paper looks at how Japan and Korea, two American allies in East Asia, handle uncertainties in their alliance relationships with the U.S. during the Trump administration. In this paper, Japan`s amendment to its "National Defense Program Guidelines," the thinking behind Prime Minister Abe`s national defense policy, and how he deals with the changes in U.S.-Japan alliance will be examined. On the other hand, this paper also discusses how South Korea plays the "pivot" role when the U.S. tries to solve the North Korean nuclear crisis, and how it prevented itself from being traded in the crisis. Furthermore, this paper also analyzes the Japan-Korean relations, which recently has been quiet, and explores the impacts on U.S.-Japan-Korea alliance. This paper argues that developing "hedging" strategies for Japan and Korea will meet their own national interests.
