    Abstract: 中層理論（theories of middle range）作為社會學理論範式，其出現有多重背景：默頓（Robert King Merton）與其老師帕森斯（Parsons）的師徒關係背景；二十世紀中葉，西方不同思潮之間的角力背景；以及西方文明內部有關「普世」與 「特殊」即「一」與「多」的論爭在不同時代思想脈絡中的呈現，這是中層理論出現的更深層背景。透過這多重背景的分析可以看到，在西方知識體系內部，理論的本意及其在人類社會中的功能與扮演的角色究竟是什麼，從這一對理論本意的理解出發，傳播研究者或許可以找到理論探索的更合理姿態與定位。
    Theories of middle range, as a theoretical paradigm of sociology, have multiple backgrounds: Robert King Merton and his teacher Parsons. In the middle of the twentieth century, the background of the struggle between different western ideologies; It is the deeper background of the middle-range theory that the debate between "universal" and "special", "one" and "many" in western civilization is presented in the ideological context of different times. Through the analysis of the multiple background you can see, in the western knowledge system, the theory meaning and its function in the human society and the role of the what in the world, starting from the understanding of the theory of this pair of original intention, spread the researchers may be able to find more reasonable attitude and position of the theoretical exploration.
