系成立於民國四十五年,原名西洋語文學系,民國八十年改名為英國語文學系。教學目標在培養文學及語言學人才,從事學術研究,促進東西文化及學術交流;中、小學英語文師資,提高國內英語文教學水準;翻譯、外事及經貿等實務外語人才,助益國家整體發展。
