The chemical weapons convention (CWC), which was signed on January 1993 and put into force on April 29, 1997, is one of the most important conventions in disarmament history. It has 24 articles, three Appendixes, and is over one hundred pages long. This article analyzes the CWC's historical background and the negotiation process, as well as its importance. The CWC is distinguished from other disarmament treaties by its establishment of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is also examined in detail in this article. In conclusion, the writer reviews the CWC's outlook.
