This paper examines the development and trend of television news research in Taiwan from 1982 to 2002, with an aim at exploring the concept of "dual text" constructed in television news knowledge through McLuhan`s media theories.Content-analyzing 102 journal articles and theses of television news, this paper finds out that McLuhan`s "rear-view mirror" perspective of media theories is manifested both in the construction of television news knowledge and research domain. Television news knowledge is primarily constructed with audio text, rather than audio-video dual text. Such "biased" framework has profound impacts on the research trend, development, topics, and theoretical approach of television news research. This paper concludes with a discussion of potential factors contributing to the findings, and suggests potential research trend for future television news research in the age of digital media.
