    Date: 2006
    Issue Date: 2009-09-17 16:20:48 (UTC+8)

This thesis investigates D. M. Thomas’s The White Hotel from the perspectives of the critique on Freudian psychoanalysis as well as the literary representation of the Holocaust in order to reflect on the imperfections of modernity. Diagnosed as an abnormal subject, the protagonist Lisa seeks help from the fictional Freud. However, the analyst persists in the thought that her symptoms are intimately connected with her lost memories of the past as well as her terrible relationship with her parents, ignoring the fact that Lisa’s Jewish identity has been the major factor for her physical pains and her mental vulnerability. By employing Deleuze and Guattari’s critique on Freudian psychoanalysis, I intend to have a further exploration of two themes in The White Hotel: one is Freudian psychoanalysis based on the excessive reliance on rationality and scientific belief, and the other is the Holocaust as well the problems derived from the literary interpretation of the massacre.
