A Study on Zhu Zhen’s Theories in Xiang-Shu and Tu-Shu—the Study of I-Ching Song Dynasty was a special era of the development of the study of I-Ching: Yili Xue (Principle Study) represented the mainstream value while Xiang-Shu (Image-Number School) in a broader sense fell into the category of Tu-Shu. The study of Xiang-Shu originating from Han-Yi had declined, for its framework could no longer cover the Xiang-Shu system in Song Dynasty. Under such circumstances, Zhu Zhen appeared as a distinct and important figure among I-Ching scholars in Song Dynasty. He developed his complex and ingenious views by resorting back to Han-Yi and, at the same time, retaining Yili ideas of Cheng Yi and Zhang Zai and including various Tu-Shu. The present study, as a continuation of the earlier study “A Study on Zhu Zhen’s I-Ching Learning,” is a two-year-long comprehensive research of Zhu Zhen’s views on Xiang-Shu and Tu-Shu respectively. Through a complete and thorough research, the study aims to provide a detailed analysis of Zhu Zhen’s theories in both Xiang-Shu and Tu-Shu, identify and compare similarities and differences between his ideas of Xiang-Shu with the original Xiang-Shu system in Han Dynasty, trace the history of his overall views of I-Ching to their early origins, and review strengths and weaknesses of his arguments, hoping to give an indication of his role in history, assess his influence and offer an intensive and objective evaluation.
