Abstract:	這個研究計畫原本以兩位十九世紀德國的古羅馬史史學家為研究對象，結果因為個人的能力和時間的限制，只能以Mommsen 作為主要的研究對象。透過閱讀他的《羅馬史》和一些零散的文章，我對於他的性格、研究方法以及對於羅馬史的知識都有更深入的認識。Mommsen 具備有淵博的希臘和拉丁文知識，又熟知法學、銘文學和錢幣學，因此可以寫出一部更廣泛和更深入的羅馬史，超越其前輩Niebuhr。Mommsen 對於羅馬共和發展趨勢的分析和所提出的論點至今大多還站得住腳，但是有些考證的細節已經遭到後人的挑戰和修正。至於對一些人物的詮釋，例如他對於西賽羅嚴厲批評和對凱薩的高度稱讚，卻很明顯地加入了強烈的主觀意識。他並不忌諱將他的民族國家和自由主義的理想投射入歷史研究中。儘管如此，Mommsen 的《羅馬史》至今還是一部值得讀的作品，不僅是因為他精彩的分析，也因為他的優雅的德文。
