    Abstract: 十三世紀的蒙古各部在成吉思汗領導下獲得統一，成為蒙古帝國的成員，也初次有了蒙古民族的認同意識。然而，元朝滅亡後，大漠南北再度分裂，其他汗國亦各自發展，連名義上的一統也煙消雲散，不留痕跡。四、五百年後，蒙古再度統一，但卻是統一在外族滿人的統治下，成為大清帝國的成員。中華民國延續清朝疆域，認為內外蒙古仍為自身領土，惟限於時勢人力，內外蒙古在二十世紀竟分屬兩國，外蒙獨立建國，而內蒙成為中國名義上不可分割的一部分。雖成一族兩國，但對蒙古民族的共同認同並未消失，依舊將邊界外的蒙古人視為本族同胞，這從外蒙自1990年開始民主改革後對中國大陸的漢人仍多抱持負面看法，但對亦屬中國公民的內蒙人士卻熱情接待可以看出。儘管內外蒙人均保有蒙古民族認同，但認同的基礎與表現卻不盡相同，成吉思汗與橫跨歐亞的蒙古帝國是雙方共同的驕傲，但外蒙經由獨立建國的奮鬥強化了民族國家的認同，而內蒙則在官定少數民族的境遇下成為更加具體的蒙古族。本研究的目的即在比較內外蒙古在二十世紀民族認同基礎與表現上的異同，進而對跨境民族的民族認同提出理論上的建議。
