This two-year study is the first sub-project of the collaborative research project on“Making paid employment and care responsibilities compatible among working carers: Sustainable development under an ageing population and a declining birthrate". The purpose of this study is to analyze the state welfare policies of Taiwan from a gender perspective and to investigate their influence on the individuals'identity of their work/family roles and wellbeing. The results of this study will be compared with the findings of other welfare state regimes produced by the international collaborative research teams from Britain, Finland, and Sweden. The data collection methods applied in this study include document analysis, secondary-data analysis, in-depth interviews, and telephone-based questionnaire surveys. It is hoped that through this study policy recommendations will be proposed to help alleviate the problem of decreasing fertility, eliminate gender inequality, and reconcile work/family conflict for citizens in order to facilitate the sustainable development of Taiwanese society.
