In the first year of this three-year project, called 「Community Planning in the Interface of National and Global Space,」we shall study the interaction between community and the nation-state. Using the discussion of civil society, in both public policy and academic circle, as our frame of reference, we want to know how both discourses contribute to the success, or failure, of the community planning as carried out in several communities in north Taiwan. In the second year, the focus will be on the exchange between community and global space, studying how traditional communities which organize their spatial experiences around human body, are under impact of both global 「financescape」and 「mediascape.」Our research here will start a dialogue with both the literature of space and place, and that of place and collective memory. In the final year, we shall really come to the issue of the interface and make two kinds of comparison. One will compare two diasporic artist communities in Taiwan. And the other will contrast a Taiwanese business community with a Taiwanese medical community in China. The purpose here is to tease out causal factors that will contribute to, or hinder, the cross-national indigenization of these communities. In sum, in an ethnographical manner this project aims at seeking factors that may explain the communal spatial transformation from being body-centered to bureaucracy-centered, and finally, to network-centered.
