The aim of this study is to explore the tension between the beliefs and behaviors of energy-saving/carbon-reduction and those of traditional culture perceived by the Taiwanese general public, along with reconstructing this tension and transforming beliefs into actions. The purposes of the study are to construct a theory of the tension between the beliefs and behaviors of energy-saving/carbon-reduction and traditional culture in order to lay a foundation for the development of the ‘Public Energy-Saving/Carbon-Reduction Literacy Tool’ and the design of related curricula, which can be used to implement an experimental teaching program, over the next three years; in addition, the Taiwanese public’s constructions of proposals on their capacities to change beliefs into actions in the debate of energy-saving/carbon-reduction and traditional culture can provide the government with data that helps with the development of appropriate tactics and measures. The research participates will include the six generations of children, adolescents, young youths, older youths, middle-aged people, and seniors who currently reside in Taiwan with a variability as diverse as possible, including different genders, home towns, social and economical backgrounds etc. (around 10 people for each generation and N = 60 in total). The study will use both qualitative and quantitative methodologies and the interview questions will include both qualitative questions and quantitative survey items. The study will be carried out by following a four-stage procedure: (1) Design the interview and survey questions based on literature review and pilot interviews with six participants. (2) Implement formal interviews. (3) Analyze the qualitative and quantitative data obtained by interviews. (4) Discuss the results and compose the report.
