    Abstract: 李歐塔在《後現代狀況：關於知識的報告》一書引言便指出，「後現代」（postmodern）一詞，恰好標示出當今文化的思路與狀況，這項研究以「敘事危機」(the crisis of narratives)為焦點。書中李歐塔多處討論科學知識合法化的基礎，分析科學知識如何使自己合法化，並質疑知識合法化的基礎。李歐塔認為「後現代」就是對「後設敘事」的質疑，他理解「科學知識並不代表知識的整體，他總是與另一種我所指的「敘事知識」並存，當代科學知識以「後設敘事」為基礎而形成文化霸權，並質疑「敘事知識」合法性的地位，因而導致「敘事知識」合法性的危機，「敘事危機」所延伸的諸多問題成為他對後現代文化現象的研究核心的關懷。對於差異的尊重，即是肯定不同學科間的「自主性」、「不可通約性」，誠如不同的科學「典範」 (paradigm)，各自有其合法性，其間不可任意轉換；人文學科與自然學科有其獨特性，不存在任何「一種普遍可交流的後設語言(universal metalanguage)」。在多元文化教育的訴求下，企圖顛覆任何以後設論述為核心的普世價值，而建立一尊重差異、肯定「他者」(otherness)的多元價值。當中心隱盾，在後現代多元的場景應是：具有特殊性的論述主體們，將是彼此為「互為他者」，在平等的基礎上，尊重他者的「差異性」。
