Based upon the frameworks of achievement goal theory and self-determination theory, the present study attempts to explore the relations among psychological control vs. autonomy support, adaptive vs. maladaptive perfectionism, and the four types of achievement goals. This study is particularly intended to examine the effects of autonomy support vs. psychological control on junior high students’ adaptive vs. maladaptive perfectionistic tendencies, as well as how both aspects of perfectionism are related to the four types of achievement goal orientations. Moreover, the present study is designed to determine whether adaptive vs. maladaptive perfectionistic tendencies mediate the relations between autonomy supportive/psychologically controlling contexts and students’ achievement goal orientations. There is a paucity of research on the antecedents of achievement goals. It is expected that the implementation of this project will bring the breakthrough in this regard. Six hundred eighth graders from Taipei city will be sampled as participants for the administration of the Perceptions of Parents Scales, the Learning Climate Questionnaire, the Psychological Control Scale, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Achievement Goals Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analyses, multiple regression analyses, multivariate analyses of variance, and structural equation modeling will be performed to analyze the collected data. It is hoped that findings of the study will advance the understanding of how the parenting and instructional practices may shape adolescents’ perfectionistic tendencies. Such understanding, in turn, would enable parents and teachers to help adolescents to cope adaptively with stress in achievement situations.
