Are You Tired? A Longitudinal Study on Factors Related to Junior High Students’ Academic Burnout Abstract Based upon the frameworks of important theories of personality and motivation including multidimensional perfectionism, achievement goals, and self-determination, the present study attempts to explore the relations among adolescents’ perfectionistic tendencies, achievement goal orientations, perceived autonomy support vs. psychological control in the classroom context, and their academic burnout and engagement. This study is particularly intended to track the trajectory of changes in academic burnout and engagement during the period between Grades Eight and Nine and to examine the effects of students’ perfectionistic tendencies and achievement goal orientations on these outcome variables of interest. Moreover, the present study is designed to evaluate the contributions of such situational factors as autonomy support vs. psychological control in the classroom context in the prediction of academic burnout and engagement in comparison to the personal factors stated above. Junior high students’ academic burnout has been largely neglected by the educational and psychological researchers. It is hoped that the implementation of this project will fill the gap and further our understanding of the personal and situational factors related to academic burnout. Six hundred eighth graders from Taipei city will be sampled as participants for the administration of the MBI-Student Survey (MBI-SS), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students (UWES-S), the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), the Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Revised (AGO-R), the Learning Climate Questionnaire (LCQ), and the Psychological Control Scale (PCS). Pearson correlation analyses, multiple regression analyses, multivariate analyses of variance, and structural equation modeling will be performed to analyze the collected data.
