This study aims to analyze and evaluate how the global warming-related risks have been covered in the news media and why. Data collection methods included a content analysis of four Taiwanese mainstream newspapers’ coverage from January 1, 2006 to April 30, 2009, together with in-depth personal interviews with eight environmental journalists. The content analysis results show that each newspaper was distinguished in its news coverage of global warming. Four newspapers were also
strong and weak in various aspects of items considered to be sufficient and necessary criteria in evaluating news quality of science-risk reports. Taiwanese news media mostly represented one view, mainly the anthropogenic explanation of global warming in its coverage. The interviewed journalists further provided interpretations from the perspective of news routines. The study ends with discussions of the implications, future research directions, and limitations of the findings.
