A supportive belief is the key element for a healthy democracy. Much research on democratic values, political support and satisfaction with democracy has been done in Taiwan. Most of them are studies on the cause and effect on political trust, but only a few examines the trust of political institutions, not to mention the trust of political parties. By using data from a nation-wide telephone interview in 2008, this article aims to examine the concept of political party trust among the Taiwanese electorate. We believe that the degree of political party trust is derived from how citizens evaluate the functions of political parties in Taiwan. The degree of political party trust in turn will have a significant effect on citizens` attitudes toward the democratic process. The results demonstrate that few people trust parties. This distrust is partly a result of how people evaluate the political parties. Citizens with positive judgments on political parties tend to have higher trust. The results, moreover, show that the degree of party trust contributes to the satisfaction with the democratic process.
