    Abstract: A renewal theory approach is proposed to derive the cost model for two dependent process steps, and then extended to derive the cost model for multiple dependent process steps. The economic individual X control chart and single cause-selecting control chart and individual Y control chart and multiple cause-selecting control chart are thus constructed to monitor the two process steps and multiple process steps respectively. They may be used to maintain the process with minimum cost and effectively distinguish which component of the processes is out of control. The optimal design parameters of these control charts can be determined by minimizing the cost model using simple grid search method. Examples are given to illustrate the design procedures and applications of the economic single cause-selecting control chart and multiple cause-selecting control chart.
