    Abstract: 小戴禮記四十九篇，自東漢之末，鄭玄為之作注，合周官儀禮通為三禮（後漢書七十九董鈞傳）。周官儀禮但記條文；而此等條文，或緣飾舊俗，或率逞臆造，自始即失其為實生活軌範的意義。去古益遠，此等不切實用之繁文縟節，或以為冗瀆亂不驗之書」（賈公彥周禮廢興序引、武帝語），或以為「難讀而無用之文」（韓愈讀儀禮語）；故自宋以下，宦學事師，雖仍不廢經學；然而三禮之傳，反以小戴禮記獨居五經之一。夫以「記」為「經」，已乖名實；（朱子云：王安石變亂舊例，廢罷儀禮而獨存禮記，棄經宗傳，遺本宗末，其失已甚。）後因讀者漸多，而小戴禮記之疑竇遂亦增滋。大抵唐宋學者，多在其章句間彌縫闕失；而於此書來源，以及編者問題，尚少申言。清代考證之學，盛極一時，學者從其細節之檢討，時或觸及全書之回穴；但以權威思想，久錮人心，既震於「經典」之名，雖有真知灼見，發覆決疑之語，猶未遑董理成書，予後人以考信之參驗。不佞接觸此記，亦頗有年，每對其零亂的章句，想見其雜駁的面目；不僅其言非一家之言，即其文亦非小戴之舊，與其稱之為小戴記，不如名之曰「鄭氏學」。燈前補拙，粗檢前代遺文以及近年新出材料，嘗試考之。
