Abstract:	美國高等教育的發展，自殖民地時期傳統古典式的小型學院到今日科系林立，課程無所不包的現代大學，所發生的改變不僅是表面一種量的大幅擴充，而是在實質上，在教育的哲學理論上已經大有不同。由於表面的許多改變與哲學理論皆有極密切的關係，如果我們要對美國高等教育的發展作一深入的研究，就必須對其哲學理論的演變有所瞭解。美國高等教育的哲學在早期可以說完全是承受歐洲的傳統，及後始因社會需要慢慢演變出自己的一套理論來。然而，這一套理論的出現，並不意謂美國高等教育界在其教育的宗旨與理論上已經看法一致。事實上，代表傳統思想的力量仍然存在，並且，由於高等教育的加速發展，新理論的缺陷日益顯著，此一力量已有逐漸抬頭之勢。這新舊兩種思想的激盪衝突，一方面代表高等教育發展所不可避免的過程，另方面亦說明美國高等教育界目前所遭遇的困擾。將來如何在這兩種思想間取得協調，為高等教育的哲學理論求一新的出路，正是今日美國教育思想界的課題。本文的目的即在依過去各種理論發生的先後，及今日所遭遇的問題，對美國高等教育的哲學背景與演變作一敘述。
