    Abstract: 新疆地區古為雍州外地。後稱「西胡」。漢以後稱為「西域」。迄清初稱「準噶爾部」與「回部」。至光緒十年（一八八四）建立行省，始稱為「新疆」。外國人則多稱為「東土耳其斯坦(East Turkestan)」或「中國土耳其斯坦」。我國與西域之官方來往始自漢代，漢代西域，在天山北路有：匈奴、蒲類、車師、烏孫諸國插帳遊牧其間，謂之行國。天山南路有：西域傳所謂之三十六國城郭土著其地，謂之居國。至晉、魏、及唐、宋諸代，北路有：鮮卑、蠕蠕、高車、突厥、鐵勒、回紇、契丹等相繼活動其間。南路則有：鄯善、于闐、龜茲、疏勒、焉耆、高昌、吐蕃、回紇等為大且久，曾設都護校尉鎮戌州府。元代遺蒙古諸王分鎮之，並於南路設別失八里行省。明代北路為衛拉特；南路仍稱別失八里、葉爾羌、吐魯番諸回部。新疆位於亞洲大陸的中央，中國大陸的西北部。其方位東北與蒙古為界，東連甘肅，東南接青海，南隔崑崙山與西藏為鄰，西南界克什米爾（一作喀什米爾Kashmir），西達帕米爾(Pamir)高原，西北界蘇俄（中亞細亞），全省面積達一百六十餘萬方公里，約當全中國總面積之七分之一，為全國第一大省，今人口約八百萬人。
