    Abstract: 當我從事中古南方門第－吳姓的研究時，曾深一層了地，透過思想史，以理解其與僑姓之間的差異，用以說明兩晉的吳姓，在遭遇亡國，與永嘉之亂後，僑姓南下的現實衝擊和變化，他們所表現的，正反映出他們內心中所想的。由此完成了「兩晉的吳姓」一文。這固然解釋了一些事實，卻不能說就因此而了解了這個時代，那是不夠的。遂選擇了中古南方最大的，也最具代表性的吳郡朱張顧陸四姓，來進行一次比較的研究，亦因是而發現了南方社會對這整個事件的觀感和評估。相信這對於我們之了解門第的本質，以及門第社會地位建立的標準，將有所助益。
