Abstract:	如果把臺灣比喻為一個人體，村落、鄉、鎮、都市等區域為其細胞，若要翔實呈現臺灣的整個歷史開發過程，則地方區域研究是不可或缺的。而目前對大甲地區的研究，已有地理、地質、考古、建築及宗教學等成果呈現，惟以歷史學的角度或方法所從事的研究，雖有部份專書或專文，仍缺少在一個完整時空的脈絡下，針對大甲地區的發展與街市的形成做一個整體性的討論與分析。因此，筆者認為若能結合前人的研究成果，並從歷史研究的角度出發，將更有助於瞭解本地區的開發過程與特色。
