Strong quantum effects in correlated materials can give rise to unusual quantum states of matter and quantum phase transitions that are not described by the standard Landau-Ginzburg paradigms. Instead of the order parameters, the natural variables to discuss these exotic quantum states and phase transitions are fractional degrees of freedom and topological order. Numerical methods are essential for our understanding of these exotic phases since the strong quantum fluctuations make approximate analytical treatments, such as mean-field theory, unreliable. The purpose of this research project is to find and characterize the microscopic mechanisms behind the variety of exotic phenomena observed in strongly-correlated matter, by performing large-scale simulations on model systems, primarily quantum spin systems.
