| Abstract: | Mr. Liang Qi-chao was a famous bourgeois thinker, statesman, scholar, and book-collector in the modern times of China. He was a backbone in the Reform Movement of 1898. He was learned and made a various contribution to the science of history, literature, philosophy, Buddhist philosophy, library science, discrimination studies, and bibliography. Having been in many western countries, he thought about the underdevelopment of China and realized that was due to the fact that people’s education had not yet been advanced. Hence, he advocated establishing scholarly societies, schools, and modern libraries to develop Chinese people’s intellectual resources and to benefit the entire Chinese society. This paper will make a detailed description and discourse on his groundbreaking contribution to the bibliography in China, the breakthrough he made in the traditional classification scheme, advocacy of library science, introduction of the American libraries as exemplars to the library development in China, founding of the Songpo Library, management of the Peking Library, organization of the Society of Chinese Libraries, and the donation of his whole collection of books for public access. |
