The internet has become one of the most important resources in all academic fields. The powerful searching and communicating scale of the internet provides ideal assistance and fits the requirement of scholars in journalism, who demand a considerable amount of the most updated information as their research materials. By analyzing the internet-based resources cited among doctoral dissertations and master theses in journalism from 1999 to 2004, the author of this paper finds that the use of internet-based resources has been increasingly growing. Commercial websites are more frequently cited than the ones run by government, educational institutes, and other organizations. The result of this analysis reveals the value of commercial websites as informative academic references. This conclusion may further be applied to information service designed for researchers in journalism.
