Encyclopedia bears the functions of inheriting cultures and communicating knowledge. Through the use of encyclopedia, graduate students could not only attain evaluation in learning efficiency as well as help in searching and inspiring their studies, but they also could able to give terms in their theses correct and authorized definitions. With the rise of the Internet, however, the emergence of online encyclopedia has impact on user behaviors, and at the same time the prosperity of Collaboration Editing Encyclopedia backed with the Internet contributes to the changes of ways of Encyclopedia editing and revising. Hence, this study aims at: (1) investigating graduate students’ information retrieval, use behaviors, use satisfactions, and influencing factors on using Expert Editing Encyclopedia Websites; (2) probing graduate students’ information retrieval, use behaviors, use satisfactions, and influencing factors on using Collaboration Editing Encyclopedia Websites; and (3) comparing the differences of graduates’ opinions in use behaviors and use satisfactions using the above two types of Encyclopedia Websites. The results of this study can thus become reference suggestions for future research.
This study first induces ten influencing factors causing the differences in editing modes between Expert Editing Encyclopedia Websites and Collaboration Editing Encyclopedia Websites. In turn, via observation, questionnaire survey, and in-depth interview, this study investigates what user behavioral differences would be caused by the aforementioned distinct editing modes for 20 graduate students to use the two types of websites, and this study obtain the following conclusions.
    (1) The retrieval type of “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” are instinct usages—simple search and search field with title. (2) The use of “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” values authors and the source, which can provide definitions with accuracy and credibility. (3) Impact factors of graduate students using “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” are authority, scholarly citation, accuracy, credibility, and relevance to learning and research. (4) The function of “Full text search” in Wikipedia has met most needs of graduate students. (5) Wikipedia’s use of articles stresses on whether the references could support the content. (6) Factors influencing graduates to use Wikipedia are currency, completeness, searchability, being prone to understand, and interface usability. (7) When the search result doesn’t look good, graduates tend to rely on browsing forms and reexamine the website information. (8) Graduates are more likely to get frustrated in searching on the “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER;” instead, they find Wikipedia user-friendly but generally use it for superficial search. (9) Graduates are willing to cite the articles on the “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” for learning and researching whereas they don’t cite from Wikipedia. (10) Both “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” and Wikipedia can provide graduate students with help for introductory understanding of something and clues for information retrieval, but they cannot satisfy further and profound research. (11) Graduate students all aren’t satisfied with the use of “Encyclopedia Websites of NAER” and Wikipedia, but agree that each website wins out with respective advantages, which assures them of future use. (12) We can learn from the comparative study that academic staff and graduates consider it the most important that the content of articles should be of authority along with accuracy, and convenience in retrieval.
According to the above conclusions, this study propose the following suggestions for websites: (1) to simplified the search function and add browsing function; (2) to enhance the classification system of articles, to give instructions of the website, and to adjust certain positions; (3) to simplified the website interface and adjust the outline, making good use of the feature of hyperlink convenience; (4) to increase the frequency of content update and revision; (5) to provide the use of Authority Files and to integrate Semantic Web.
