Abstract:	本研究利用政府統計，分析民國三十八至六十一年臺灣地區人口轉移與社會經濟發展的關係，並就這一期間分為兩個階段：發韌階段（三十八至四十九年）及過渡階段（五十至六十一年），作比較觀察，更深入瞭解不同社會經濟發展階段的影響。本研究發現，社會發展水準與死亡率及生育率的下降有密切關係。死亡率於發軔階段就開始下降，而在過渡階段更為快速，但隨著全面社會經濟發展的增加，有緩和的趨勢。生育率於過渡階段才開始下降，但隨著全面社會經濟發展的展開而加速。在社會經濟發展過程中，生育率的下降與都市工業社會結構特徵的出現及發展有直接關係；經濟工業發展的影響是遲滯大於即刻，而社會發展的影響正相反。又社會經濟發展創造了遲婚與生育控制的有利條件，而直接減少生育率。
