    Abstract: 奴婢為無人格、無自由、可以買賣，可以讓予之一種財產，不能取得法律上的保障。民國以前的中國，歷代皆有奴婢，只是數目多寡不同而已，清代的奴婢約三千餘萬，為歷代以來奴婢數目最多者，其來源有俘虜為奴、罪犯為奴、賣身為奴。其生活有極少數招搖、擅權、納賄的達官貴人之幸運家奴；有大多數赤腳蓬頭、汲水拾薪、紡紗采桑、不得眠、半飢餓的貧困家庭之悲慘家奴；有「富比王侯」之奴；有時遭「淫辱殺害」之奴。其階級有僮僕之僮僕，有奴婢之奴婢，形形色色，不一而足。加以滿清以異族入主中國，極為重視主僕名份，訂立嚴刑峻法，預防奴婢犯上逃亡，以鞏固其統治地位之安全，故對奴婢動輒虐殺，為三代以降所僅見，上行下效，不分滿漢，不論貧富，無不虐奴成風，充滿暴戾之氣，絕少憐憫之心，清代奴婢之悲慘遭遇，較漢唐元明尤有過之。
