Abstract:	獨立後的印尼，其政局可分為三個明顯時期：（一）議會民主實驗期，（二）蘇卡諾總統「指導民主」期，（三）蘇哈托總統的「新秩序」期。此三期政治容貌雖不同，但其間仍有不少共通處和連續點，此必須借助政治文化概念來解釋。印尼種族繁多，語言習俗不一，故本文僅以佔全國人口多數且居政治文化主導地位的爪哇人為代表來討論。爪哇人除原有土著文化外，早期受印度教佛教教義影響極深，後來接受回教信仰，飽嚐過被長期殖民統治的經驗，本世紀以降，又受到西方民族主義和民主觀念的衝擊，因而塑造了一個混合的、折衷的、能有相當彈性的文化體系。印尼領導者特擅長於創造和操縱各種意識符號，以期超越上述各信念來源之間必然存在的矛盾，達到國家整合目的，同時藉以掩飾實際統治的缺失。但虔誠教徒欲根據嚴格解釋的教義建立一回教國家，與世俗化領導階層致力把印尼建立為現代化的民族國家，兩者之間的歧見卻很難調和化解。此一文化裂隙，是印尼政治發展的一潛伏危機。
