    Abstract: 1975年蔣中正去世，國內立即面臨領導中心轉移問題。民主運動也於1977年地方選舉之後興起。際此國內政局發生劇烈變動之時，吳三連有關報業政治責任和民主政治之理念，及其自立晚報言論和報導之配合，就成為一個值得探討的主題。1970年代中期以後，臺灣報業界尚呈穩定狀況，但除了少數專業性及獨立性報紙持續成長外，大抵呈現「強者愈強，弱者愈弱」之現象。強勢性報紙如余紀忠之中國時報及王惕吾之聯合報，但是這兩個執台灣報業之牛耳的報系一度曾被納入權力體系之中，因此兩者保守性格雖有程度之別，但處於受制性地位則似無分軒輊。吳三連向來對於民主自由具有堅定的信仰，在尊重最高領導中心的政治認同與當局的期望無歧異下，配合自立晚報既有的敢言性格，保持其向來所標榜的「無黨無派獨力經營」的立場，使得自立晚報得以符合廣大讀者的理性標準，在新聞的客觀性、真實性與公正性上常有獨到的表現，漸由弱勢媒體一躍而成為臺灣新聞及言論的自由堡壘，在政治新聞與言論上屢屢扮演急先鋒的角色，對於政局發展亦發揮了導向及穩定的作用。本文試以「鞏固領導中心的理念與自立晚報言論的配合」、「尊重生命、維護人權的堅定態度與自立晚報的讜論」、「吳三連對黨外運動的看法與自立晚報的文字聲援」三方面，闡述1975～1989年間，吳三連個人的理念及其對自立晚報報導與評論的影響。
