Purpose: From the perspective of psychologists, this present study delineated the responses and coping strategies clients had when developing inner dependency conflict toward their psychologists in relational approach in-depth relationships, as well as how a psychologist assist the clients in changing their images of authorities and self-image under the intimate dependent relationships. Methods: Interviews were conducted with 4senior psychologists who adopted relational approach and in-depth counseling. The content analysis method was tested by rereading and by cross-comparing the interview transcripts. Results: The data showed that (a) client’s needs for dependency were satisfied through being helped effectively. At the same time, they became anxious about depending on their psychologists due to the worry of re-enacting the painful experience of being rejected in the past. Thus, the ways how clients coped with their inner dependency conflict could be categorized into three types: “active strategies,” “passive strategies,” and “forming competitive relationships.” (b) Three main characteristics of the images that clients built toward positive authorities are “stable”, “responsive” and “responsible for self-emotion”. By changing the images of authorities, clients are able to alter the reference structures they held toward the outside worlds. (c) Clients formulated positive self-concept and self-evaluation through three processes: “ Weaken the strength of negative maintenance”, ”Learning of self-compassion” and “Built self-value from the psychologists’ eyes“. Conclusions: During in-depth counseling relationship, clients adopted different ways of coping to deal with inner dependency conflicts. Though these coping strategies might bring certain pressures and threats to psychologists, the nature of clients’ resistance indicated that clients regarded psychologists as important others, and they intended to resolve their core inner conflicts while correcting their original emotional experience and interpersonal model through the relationship with their psychologists. By the whole process, the clients gradually formulated positive self-images and images of authorities.
