Title: Prophetic Tradition in the Epistles of Ignatius of Antioch
    Authors: 張毅民

Abstract: By examining the prophetic tradition’s elements in Ignatius’s epistles, this paper tries to extend what was argued by Helmut Koester (1926-2016) on the significance of the prophetic tradition in the studies of the historical Jesus and early church history; although Koester contends that the Scriptures of Israel do not play any role in Ignatius’ thoughts or arguments. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the aspects of the prophetic tradition in the epistles of Ignatius of Antioch. This paper contends that Ignatius of Antioch, as well as other Apostolic Fathers, such as writers of Shepherd of Hermas, 1 Clement, the Epistle of Barnabas, and the Didache, were powerfully influenced by the prophetic tradition of Israel. In promoting the threefold ministry of bishop, this paper points out that Ignatius was exercising his authority as a prophet (instead of his power as a bishop) to announce the command of God whilst defending the apostolic and authoritative tradition.
