Abstract: This study explored the challenges and reflections that Taiwanese psychologists perceive during multicultural counseling with new immigrant clients. The participants were six counselors who had experience counseling new immigrants. Data were collected using individual interviews and analyzed through a discovery-oriented qualitative method. From the perspective of the psychologists, new immigrants were most motivated to seek counseling for issues about their children, their unique situation as immigrants, economic problems, and informed consent. Due to their different cultural contexts, psychologists and the new immigrants exhibited different views on their current home and parents’ home, and their perceptions of the roles of women. The self-awareness and reflection of psychologists are discussed. Detouring situatedness is discussed to understand and reflect on language and communication strategies, counseling relationships (e.g., psychologists as authority), and reflective empathy. Finally, suggestions for further research, counselor training, and counselor education are provided.
