Before being rehabilitated in the second half of the 20th century, the Baroque has long been perceived as a period with imprecise contours. This may be due to the multiple ambivalences that go through this era in a visceral way. The Baroque, it is as much love as hatred of life, the taste of earthly rejoicing as the feeling of the vanity of everything, light and darkness, God and the devil... The present article proposes to analyze the "dark" side of the Baroque soul, that is, the melancholy that inhabits it and expresses itself in the French Baroque poetry. It consists of three main parts, dealing respectively with the phenomenology of the pain of living in the Baroque period, the causes and the consequences of melancholy, and, finally, the remedies for it. We will see, in this course, the importance of the official religion, supposed to constitute a source of all the consolations against the pain of living, but also of the heterodox positions, sometimes going so far as to completely reverse the signs between life and death, between pleasure and suffering. This intellectual audacity is one of the characteristic traits of the Baroque mentality, marked by the seal of ruthless lucidity.
