The novel infectious disease COVID-19 emerged in 2019 and swiftly wreaked havoc globally. In response, vaccine manufacturers and biotech entities rapidly developed vaccines. Governments around the world, after assessing the safety and efficacy of these vaccines, granted them Emergency Use Authorizations and began administering them to the general public. Recognizing that the elderly are more likely to develop severe symptoms after contracting COVID-19, the Taiwanese government prioritized individuals aged 75 and above to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine (henceforth referred to as the AZ vaccine), which was co-developed by the British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, starting from June 15, 2021."
However, media reports highlighted several cases of elderly individuals dying after receiving the AZ vaccine. Although these adverse vaccine events do not necessarily indicate that the cause of death was directly linked to the AZ vaccine administration, such media coverage led many elderly individuals to become hesitant about receiving the AZ vaccine. This prompted the researcher to explore: How does the media construct the risks associated with the AZ vaccine?
This study collected online news articles, television news reports, and political commentary programs from the two weeks following the first reported case of an adverse vaccine reaction leading to death after receiving the AZ vaccine in the country. It was observed that the volume of reports was highest on June 17, 2021. Using content analysis, this study examined the themes and sources of the news on this particular day. By combining the unique features of various texts, the study analyzed images from online news, visuals and sounds from television news, and the tone of topic sentences in political commentary programs. The goal was to approach contemporary news consumption behaviors across various media through a multimodal analysis approach.
The study revealed that: (1) Even though at that time no case had been determined to have died as a direct result of receiving the AZ vaccine, the media frequently reported on deaths following the administration of the AZ vaccine; (2) The content of news was predominantly focused on the sequence of events leading to the individual`s death, with a lack of information evaluating the risks of the vaccine; (3) Media frequently cited specific sources that amplified the perceived risks of vaccination; (4) The media portrayed adverse vaccine events in a sensational manner, framing them as tragedies to stimulate the sensory experiences of viewers; All these findings illustrate that (5) The media, in the process of conveying risk information, not only acts as an intermediary but also serves as an amplifier of perceived risks.
