This thesis discusses Turkey’s hedging strategy towards the United States in the context of Syrian crisis. In the 20th century Turkey was known as a close economic and security partner of the United States by its pro-western policy. The collapse of the Soviet Union has brought newly independent countries along with new opportunities for cooperation. With the new world order, Turkey’s Foreign Policy towards the United States drastically changed under the new government. Since Erdogan came to power, Turkey’s foreign policy has significantly drifted away from the West to the East towards such states as Russia and Iran in search of new ways for cooperation and economic and security benefits. Meanwhile, the Arab Spring and the subsequent events enhanced a negative image of the United States among the Arab World due to the U.S. attempts to replace the old regimes and by dragging the Middle East states into revolutions in order to spread pro-western democracy in the Middle East region. The Syrian Crisis explains the main factors and consequences of Turkey’s perception of the United States and changes in its foreign policy drifting towards Russia and Iran in the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea under Erdogan’s presidency.
