Starting from the early years of the Republic of China, archaeology has led to the rapid development of ancient history research. In the recent decades, a large number of Chu inscribed bamboo slips have been unearthed, which has triggered the flourishing development of research on Chu history, Chu culture, Chu literature, Chu characters, etc. The research topic of this study is “Historical Memories on the Origin and Development of the Chu Population in the Past,” belonging to the fields of Chu history and Chu literature. This study intended to summarize the issues associated with the origin and development of the Chu population in the past using new materials and new methods, as well as propose new opinions. The research scope ranged from ancestor legends of the Chu people to Chu people becoming a feudatory in the early Zhou Dynasty. The research materials were mainly unearthed literature, including relevant records in the literature that has been passed down from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to Western Han Dynasty. For the research methods, this study re-investigated the historical messages recorded in the literature from the perspective of “memories,” namely, this study analyzed the standpoints and eras described in relevant materials, inspected the differences and similarities of descriptions on different eras and standpoints, and attempted to find out reliable records, suspicious content, and the traces of continuation, missing, fabrication, and transformation of memories from these differences and similarities. The specific research included two parts: textual criticism of historical materials and historical interpretations. The former included the collection of annotations and textural criticism of relevant contents in literature, such as Tsinghua Bamboo Slips, “Chu Residence,” “Guo Yu. Cheng Yu,” and “Shiji. Chu Shijia.” The latter focused on 3 themes: “memories on bloodline identity,” “memories on ethnic identity,” and “memories on political identity.” This study continued with the author’s doctoral dissertation on population memories of the Qin people and Wu people. On the one hand, this study intended to innovate the research on the history of Pre-Qin Dynasty and literature of Chu. On the other hand, this study also intended to gradually develop an overall summary of how the ethnic historical memories of ethnic groups surrounding the Central Plains in the Pre-Qin Dynasty were formed or constructed.
