How children of immigrant fare in the host society has drawn a lot of attention in the sociology and demography literature. However, no study has examined the time use in native and immigrant children and its implications to the developmental gaps between native and immigrant children. This study aims to investigate the social organization of time use in native and immigrant children using the nationally representative data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. By analyzing longitudinal time diary data, this project examine how native and immigrant children use their time from birth to 11 years old and how socioeconomic status, family process, and parental immigration experience contribute to the differences time use patterns between the two groups of children. The project will also study whether different patterns of time use contribute to the different developmental outcomes between native and immigrant children over time. More importantly, this study will answer the following four important questions: (1) how native and immigrant children use their time? Is there any difference in the social organization of time between native and immigrant children? (2) how do native and immigrant children’s use of time change over time? Is there any native and immigrant difference in the trajectories of time use? (3) can and to what extent social and cultural factors—especially socioeconomic status and degree of acculturation—explain the difference, if any, in native and immigrant children’s time use? (4) Do immigrant and native children’s organization of time use contribute to the divergent developmental pathways of the two groups? Results from this study will make significant contributions to the theories and research in sociology, immigration, and child development and inform future public policy that aim to promote the integration and well-being of children of immigrant.
