This study aims to explore the subjective experiences and practical challenges faced by attachment-oriented therapists in the counseling process with children who have experienced domestic violence and child abuse. Utilizing a qualitative approach grounded in social constructionism, the researcher conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with four therapists who primarily serve this population. Data were analyzed using a five-step model of analytic abstraction, and three core themes were synthesized:therapists’ perceptions of abused children, the construction of therapeutic relationships, and therapists’ self-care and internal restoration.
Findings revealed that attachment-oriented therapists’ understanding of abused children is deeply rooted in their awareness of adverse childhood experiences and the need to reconstruct attachment styles. Within the therapeutic relationship, therapists provide consistent responsiveness and stable presence, creating possibilities for rebuilding secure attachments. However, the counseling process often involves challenges such as clients’ ambivalent yet intense attachment needs, relationship instability caused by trust difficulties, and emotional dysregulation rooted in trauma.Therapists reported adapting by cultivating self-awareness, setting professional boundaries, and seeking supervision. In addition, considerable emphasis is placed on self-care to prevent burnout and vicarious trauma.
In conclusion, this study contributes to the practical understanding of attachment-oriented therapy within trauma contexts and underscores the value of therapists’subjective reflections in enhancing clinical competence. It calls for culturally attuned therapists who recognize the socioecological environments of abused children, and it advocates for counselor training programs to refocus on the relational essence of therapy. By integrating attachment-based and trauma-informed perspectives through cross-system and cultural frameworks, the study aims to offer practical guidance and support for novice therapists working with this population.
