This study examines how film fans engage in review writing and self-presentation on the social media platform Letterboxd in the digital age, focusing on how they construct identity and emotional resonance through their reviews. Using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and analysis of review texts, the study explores users' writing styles and participation in the platform's community.
The findings identify two main review types on Letterboxd: analytical-discursive and meme-like short-form reviews. The former provides in-depth reflections, while the latter uses concise, creative expressions linked to pop culture. Reviews often feature attributes like immediate post-viewing notes, emotional self-disclosure, and humor. The study highlights a shift in the concept of "film review" in the digital age, encompassing any commentary that conveys personal perspectives, recommends films, and sparks discussions.
Film fans also use profile elements like favorite films and viewing stats for self-presentation, showcasing their tastes. However, users prioritize the perspectives expressed in their reviews over their platform profile. The study concludes that Letterboxd fosters a stronger sense of identity among users, demonstrating the role of online communities in shaping personal identity.
