It has been thirty years since I began to study modern history of Mongolia as a graduate student. Mongol nationalism has been my major academic interest. Besides theses and articles, I would like to complete a book fully devoted to this subject. The part I need to study more is the origin(s) of Mongol nationalism. The Mongols formed a coalition of tribal groups in the twelfth century, and established the Yeke Mongol Ulus in the thirteenth century. They did not have a sense of ethnic community at the beginning, but were only a coalition of tribal groups, and certainly could not be considered a Mongol nation. Masaaki Sugiyama is a distinguished Japanese scholar who considers that the Mongol community appeared after the Mongols led by Chinggis Khan began their expedition westward in 1211. He believes that being far from their homeland for six years during the expedition allowed the Mongol herdsmen to create a sense of community. Nationalism becomes possible only after a sense of ethnic community emerges. Did the origin of Mongol nationalism take place during the Mongol empire, the North-Yuan and Ming, or the Qing periods? In what conditions did it appear? Is/Are there one origin or more origins? What is/are the nature of the origin(s)? These are questions I would like to answer. Although Sugiyama mentions the origin of Mongol community during Mongol empire, he does not connect it to Mongol nationalism in modern time. Is such a connection possible? Does medieval Mongol nationalism exist? Is Mongol nationalism a modern product? Are there diachronic connections between medieval and modern Mongol nationalism? If so, what are the similarities and differences between the two? If there is not diachronic connection, what are the differences between the two or more kinds of nationalism in different times? The origin of Mongol nationalism is a basic question, but also a question difficult to answer. I will try to answer a series of such questions to clarify the nature of Mongol nationalism.
