The Buryats were a branch of the Mongols. Their residential region became part of Russian territory as early as in the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Because they were able to communicate between the Russians and Mongols in language and culture, they were one of the tools used by the Russian government to expand its influence in Outer Mongolia. In the Soviet period, this application became more and more obvious. As representatives of the Comintern, government officials or holders of other important positions, the Buryats won a pivotal position in Outer Mongolia in the 1920s. They therefore had an influence on the direction of the political line in the early days of Mongolian independence.
The first NSC (now MOST) research project executed by the author used El'bekdorji Rinchino and Ts. J. Jamtsarano as examples to study the activities of the Buryats in the 1920s. However, after that, the author have mainly studied Outer Mongolia, occasionally involving Inner Mongolia, and did not have in-depth research on Buryatia. While working on the present MOST project "The Origin(s) of Mongol Nationalism," the author found that it is necessary to re-examine the modern history of Buryatia if she wants to know more about the relations between Mongolia and Buryatia before 1920s.
In recent years, since many archival documents and materials concerning important political and cultural Buryat figures have been published and the research of local scholars has also increased in Ulan Ude, capital of Buryatia, it becomes easier to obtain historical materials and related books. The author thus decides to spend the following two years to study modern history of Buryatia.
The author hopes to further study the changes that the Buryats faced as their homeland became part of Russian territory and the development and changes of Buryat nationalism. The author would also like to understand and systematically organize the overall situation and major events, especially those between Buryatia and Outer Mongolia. This project will help analyze and compare the relationship and its meaning of Buryat and Mongolian nationalism and then better understand the interactions among China, Russia, Mongolia and Buryatia.
