This study investigates the relationship between CEO Power and workplace safety in Taiwanese listed companies, examining impacts from Structural, Ownership, Expert, and Prestige power. Using 2,363 firm-year observations in 2015 to 2022 from TWSE and TPEx listed firms, logistic regression models were applied, with disabling injury occurrence as the dependent variable. Results show a significant positive association between overall CEO Power and the likelihood of disabling injuries, suggesting excessive CEO Power negatively affects workplace safety. CEO "structural power" (from duality and compensation ratios) was the most critical positive predictor of disabling injuries. However, CEO’s Ownership, Expert, and Prestige power showed insignificant impacts. A lagged negative effect of prior-period CEO Power on current workplace safety was also found. This study, using a localized CEO Power index, highlights the significant influence of CEO structural power on workplace safety in Taiwan. It offers managerial implications for corporate governance, urging firms to monitor concentrated CEO Power and enhance board oversight to protect employee well-being. |
